Two Members of Eugene (Oregon) Symphony Killed Coming Home From Rehearsal

Two members of the Eugene (Oregon) Symphony were killed in a car crash caused by a driver driving in the wrong direction on Sunday (February 11) night, reports The Oregonian.

The two musicians killed were Kjersten J. Oquist , 36, and Angela Svendsen, 31.

Oquist played principal viola with the Eugene Symphony and was the acting assistant principal viola player in the Oregon Ballet Theatre orchestra; she also played with the Portland Opera orchestra.

Svendsen played principal second violin with the Eugene Symphony and also played with the Oregon Ballet Theatre orchestra and Portland Opera orchestra.

The two were rehearsing for a concert scheduled Thursday featuring flutist James Galway.

Fivea Sharipoff, 26, faces two counts of first-degree manslaughter and one count of second-degree assault in the wreck.

"Both Angela and Kjersten were wonderful leaders," Paul Winberg, executive director of the Eugene Symphony told the Oregonian. "We are still communicating this tragedy to the orchestra family, figuring out what we want to do, how we want to help our symphony deal with this tragedy."

Oquist was driving the Saturn and Svendsen was a passenger in the front seat as they drove north on Oregon's Interstate Five on Sunday night. Kelly Gronli, 28, the principal oboe player with the Eugene Symphony, was in the back seat and suffered minor injuries, according to the paper.
