The ninth annual International Keyboard Institute & Festival (IKIF) got started this past weekend at Mannes College The New School for Music with a July 15 recital by Jerome Rose, the festival's founder and director.

IKIF 2007 runs through July 29, with two concerts daily through July 28 and lectures and master classes scheduled throughout the festival's two weeks. Tomorrow, for instance, features recitals by the rising young pianist Benjamin Hochman at 6 p.m. and the admired Georgian veteran Eteri Andjaparidze at 8:30 p.m.

Among the many other noteworthy performances are a July 20 recital of Chopin and Rachmaninoff by 2001 Van Cliburn Competition winner Olga Kern; a July 23 lecture/performance, titled "Music, Madness, and Mortality," hosted by WQXR radio's David Dubal; a July 27 recital by 2005 Cliburn gold medalist Alexander Kobrin; and IKIF's final evening concert on July 28, at which Marc-Andrй Hamelin performs music by Haydn, Alexis Weissenberg, Chopin and Leopold Godowsky as well as two of his own etudes.

Other performers on the schedule include Denis Kozhukhin, Ivбn Martin, Alexander Gavrylyuk, Jeffrey Swann, Boris Giltburg, Matti Raekallio, Anna Polonsky, Sa Chen, Michel Bйroff, Alberto Nosи, Andrew Brownell, Stephen Beus, Yuan Sheng, Xiayin Wang, Joaquin Achъcarro, Alessio Bax, Akiko Ebi and Jean-Frйdйric Neuberger.

IKIF closes on Sunday, July 29, with the finals of the MacKenzie Awards, given to students at the institute.
