Henry Brant Brings His Spatial Work Dormant Craters Back to Lincoln Center Out of Doors Aug. 22

Henry Brant Brings His Spatial Work Dormant Craters Back to Lincoln Center Out of Doors Aug. 22

Dormant Craters, a 30-minute percussion extravaganza written for the outdoor spaces at Lincoln Center, returns to the complex tomorrow evening in a performance presented by Lincoln Center Out of Doors, which commissioned the piece in 1995.

Henry Brant, now 93 and the composer who pioneered spatial music in the U.S., created the work for 16 percussionists playing everything from timpani to gamelan to cowbells to chimes to drum set to West Indian steel drums to Chinese wood blocks to saucepan lids.

Performing Dormant Craters tomorrow evening will be the Manhattan School of Music Percussion Ensemble, Gamelan Son of Lion, steel drummer Brandon Patton and friends, and percussionists Pheeroan akLaff and Warren Smith, all conducted by composer and professor Neely Bruce.

There will be two performances of Dormant Craters, at 7:00 p.m. and 7:45 p.m., on the South Plaza of Lincoln Center. The event is free and open to the public; more information is available at www.lincolncenter.org.
