LA Opera to Celebrate Anniversary of Domingo Debut
Los Angeles Opera will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Placido Domingo's Los Angeles debut in a gala concert at Walt Disney Hall on April 18. The tenor sang the title role in Alberto Ginastera's Don Rodrigo during a 1967 tour with the New York City Opera at the then-new Dorothy Chandler Pavillion. Domingo is often associated with Verdi’s Otello, whose title role he has recorded three times (including the film by Zeffirelli in 1986), but has performed 125 different roles, the most of than any tenor in the history of Western music. He has also opened the Metropolitan Opera season on 21 separate occasions, eclipsing Enrico Caruso’s record-setting 17 in 1999. The 66-year-old consummate lirico spinto tenor was appointed artistic director of Washington Opera in 1996 and of Los Angeles Opera in 2000. Program and ticket details will be released in January.
